Our Lineage

In Soo Bahk Do, as with all martial arts, one's "instructor lineage" is of great importance. Among many other things, it shows practitioners' connection to each other and to our tradition.

PJ Steyer, Sa Bom Nim (DB 30182) originally trained under Doris Beaven, Sa Bom Nim (DB 19765).

Upon Master Beaven's retirement, Master Steyer continued his study under her senior student, James Harwood, Sa Bom Nim (DB 23104), with whom he continues to train on a regular basis.

Master Beaven's instructor is Benjamin Cortese, Sa Bom Nim (DB 11689), who is also one of the U.S. Moo Duk Kwan Federation's founders and charter members.

Master Cortese's instructor is Hwang Hyun Chul, Kwan Jang Nim (DB 509), our Grandmaster and President of the Moo Duk Kwan.

Grandmaster Hwang is the son and successor of the legendary Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim, the founder of the Moo Duk Kwan, who passed away in July of 2002.

Notes

Master Beaven began her training under Richard Byrne, Sa Bom Nim (DB 14945), whose instructor was Kim Chun Sik, Sa Bom Nim (DB 2457), whose instructor was Kim Song Ki, Sa Bom Nim (DB 539), whose instructor was Kim Jong Seok, Sun Beh Nim (DB 90), whose instructor was Han Young Tae, Sa Bom Nim (DB 37) who was a direct student of Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim.

Beaven Sa Bom Nim received her Cho Dan from Robert Beaudoin, Sa Bom Nim (DB 5661), who was one of the founding members of the Moo Duk Kwan in the United States. Master Beaudoin's instructor is Shin Jae Chul, Sa Bom Nim (DB 698), also a student of Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim.

Masters Han Young Tae, Kim Song Ki, Shin Jae Chul, Kim Chun Sik, Beaudoin, and Byrne have since left the Moo Duk Kwan. Mr. Kim Jong Seok is deceased.
